On 9 May 2016 an intriguing and rare event will occur. Seen from some parts of the Earth, Mercury, the planet nearest to the Sun, will cross the Sun’s surface (Fig. 1a & 1b). Such a phenomenon is better known for the Moon, for during such an eclipse the sky noticeably darkens, so people know that something special is going on. But as Mercury is very, very small in comparison to the Sun, you might never know that it is happening.
