[Workshop] Whose Story of Science? Diversity and the History of Science (Amsterdam, 7 December 2017; Deadline 19 November)

Is the public image of who contributes to science diversifying? Over the last years various types of media seem to be disavowing traditional narratives of men in locations of power as the sole generators of knowledge, such as the movie ‘Hidden Figures’ starring African-American mathematicians working in the U.S. space program. Users of social media unfold serious critiques in playful guise via hashtags like #ILookLikeAProfessor and #ILookLikeAHistorian. Lees meer…

Nacht Van Descartes / Night of Descartes 2017, “Science and the Future” (20 november 2017)

Science is always reflecting about its own future: Which experiments should I perform tomorrow? What are the trends in the field that make my research proposal promising? Which strategic themes can help to increase our university’s international visibility? What are the topics that need to be on the national research agenda? Which promises does science hold, and how can we counteract the potentially dystopic consequences of apparently attractive research projects? How accurate are the predictions that we can make on the basis of a law of nature? What kind of project might the grant agencies want to see? Why is the future of science so attractive for all sorts of popular genres? Even though we have learned that no reliable predictions concerning the future course of science are possible, we constantly ponder the future of our work – in our research practices, in academic politics, in popularizing science.

Call for Papers: Material Cultures of Psychiatry (3-4 May 2018, Hamburg; Deadline 15 December 2015)

In the past, our ideas of psychiatric hospitals and their history have been shaped by objects like straitjackets, cribs and binding belts. These powerful objects are often used as a synonym for psychiatry and the way psychiatric patients are treated. But what do we really know about the social life (see Majerus 2011) of psychiatric patients and the stories of less spectacular objects in the everyday life of psychiatric institutions? What do we know about the material cultures of these places in general?    Lees meer…

Wetenschapspaleizen.
