Jobs: Two PhD positions in History of Humanities and Sciences (Amsterdam University; Deadline: 1 April 2016)
The Faculty of Humanities (Institute for Logic, Language and Computation) and the Faculty of Science (Institute of Physics (IOP) of the University of Amsterdam) are looking for two PhD candidates.
Both institutes are located at the Amsterdam Science Park. The positions will reinforce the newly founded Center for the History of Humanities and Sciences, and are funded by the NWO Humanities open competition programme ‘The Flow of Cognitive Goods: Towards a Post-Disciplinary History of Knowledge’. Call for papers: HSS Annual Meeting (Atlanta, Georgia, 3-6 November 2016; Deadline 8 April 2016)
The History of Science Society will hold its 2016 Annual Meeting in the Westin Peachtree hotel in downtown Atlanta on 3-6 November this year. At 73 stories (220.37 m (723 ft)), the Westin is the second tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere, with sweeping views of Georgia’s cityscape. And because we will be meeting with our colleagues from the Philosophy of Science Association and, for the first time, with the Society for Literature, Science and the Arts, we are fortunate that we can occupy the same hotel with plenty of space to move around. Prijsvraag 2014 Teylers Tweede Genootschap: Schoolvorming in de natuurwetenschappen (Deadline: 1 januari 2017)
In het kader van de ruim 200-jarige traditie van Teylers Stichting om wetenschappelijk onderzoek te bevorderen, hebben Directeuren van Teylers Stichting en de leden van Teylers Tweede Genootschap besloten voor het jaar 2014 een prijsvraag uit te schrijven over een onderwerp uit de wetenschapsgeschiedenis.

Gevraagd wordt: een studie naar schoolvorming in de natuurwetenschappen, bijvoorbeeld in de natuurkunde, met aandacht voor bijvoorbeeld het historisch perspectief of de vraag in hoeverre schoolvorming onder invloed van moderne communicatiemiddelen en met name internet zal veranderen. Lees meer…
Blog: Een pleidooi voor het serieus nemen van de wetenschappelijke revolutie

Historici zijn er tegenwoordig snel bij om kritiek te leveren op het begrip “wetenschappelijke revolutie”. Zij hebben allerlei tegenstrijdigheden en verborgen aannames aan het licht gebracht, maar zijn minder ijverig geweest om uit te leggen in hoeverre het begrip, ondanks die tekortkomingen, nog gebruikt kan worden. Die taak lijkt niettemin nuttiger dan enkel kritiek leveren. Historici hebben nu eenmaal de taak om het verleden te begrijpen en daartoe moeten ze concepten ontwikkelen. Bovendien doet het begrip ondanks alle kritiek nog steeds opgeld. Kennelijk kunnen we er moeilijk buiten. In het volgende lanceer ik mijn poging om een bruikbare invulling te vinden.
