Tijdens dit college maken de studenten kennis met de ontstaansgeschiedenis van universitaire collecties in relatie tot het universitair onderwijs. Daarbij gaat het niet alleen om de bibliotheekcollecties, maar ook om de collecties realia op het gebied van de geneeskunde en de natuurwetenschappen, inclusief de daarbij behorende collecties tekeningen en foto’s. Cultures of Collecting: Early Modern Cultures of Collecting (vak MA Arts and Culture: specialisation Museums and Collections)

This course is part of the MA track Museums and Collections, and will introduce students to the history and theory of early modern collections and collecting cultures. We will discuss key concepts such as “wonder” and “curiosity” and look at contemporary sources pertinent to research on collecting history. The Scienitific Revolution (vak BA Wijsbegeerte)

Western knowledge and understanding of the natural world changed between 1550 and 1700. This period is conventionally called the “scientific revolution”. From one perspective, this period witnessed the development of many concepts used in present-day science, such as the concepts of law of nature, experiment, force, and planet, as well as the idea of modern science itself. From another perspective, however, the concerns and activities of natural philosophers of this period strike us as strange. In part, this strangeness is related to the social contexts in which they worked. In this course, we will switch repeatedly between the perspectives of familiarity and unfamiliarity to gain a fuller understanding of how people knew nature in early-modern Europe. Docent: Dr. J.W. Leids Anatomisch Museum

Het Anatomisch Museum is onderdeel van de Faculteit Geneeskunde en nauw verbonden met het LUMC. Het museum staat ten dienste van het medisch en biomedisch onderwijs en is beschikbaar voor docenten en studenten van (para)medische opleidingen en docenten en leerlingen van middelbare scholen, richting Natuur & Gezondheid. Geschiedenis van de wiskunde
