Call for articles: Universitaire cultuur 1780-1940 (Deadline: 1 oktober 2019)

De redactie van De Moderne Tijd heeft de ambitie een themanummer te gaan wijden aan de universitaire cultuur in Nederland en Vlaanderen in de periode die het tijdschrift bestrijkt, de lange negentiende eeuw (1780-1940).
Aanleiding daarvoor is de hartenkreet die Eelco Runia in januari 2018 publiceerde in de NRC: ‘Waarom ik ontslag neem bij de universiteit’. Bij wijze van exitgesprek legt hij in dat artikel uit waarom hij zijn baan als docent aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen heeft opgezegd. Hij constateert dat het neoliberale bestuursmodel dat marktdenken heeft opgelegd aan de universiteiten, hem als docent dwingt zijn wetenschappelijke en professionele idealen en identiteit te verloochenen. Conference: Teaching the history of Knowledge: Purposes, Problems, Practices (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, 20 March 2019)
This one-day conference, organized by the VU Stevin Centre in celebration of its fifth anniversary, focuses on the rationales of teaching the history of knowledge and on finding appealing ways of doing so. How do we convey the important and relevance of our courses? And what exactly is our message? What, for instance, is the added value for medical students of a course in the history of medicine? Which competences should we aim to teach in our courses? And how can we innovate and optimize our teaching? How do we cater for the needs of several different target groups? What do museums have to offer to our students? How can we make students experience the so-called “historical sensation”?

Today more than ever computers have taken center stage in our lives: science, economy, politics, art, there is no single human endeavour that has been left unaffected by Information Technologies. Whether this impact is positive or negative, is still very much up for debate.
People connected to the Internet can enjoy an unprecedented amount of information and computing power at their disposal, but more and more negative side effects of a widespread use of computers are brought to our attention: automation bias, echo chambers, shortened attention spans, job displacement, election hacking are just a few examples. The latest AI-hype fuelled by computationally feasible machine learning techniques have brought to reality philosophical topics previously relegated to mental experiments and theoretical discourses. Met het recente besluit de opleiding Nederlands niet meer aan te bieden voor nieuwe bachelorstudenten, komt een eind aan een tijdperk aan de VU. De studierichting Nederlands bestond sinds 1918, toen de eerste lector in dit vak werd benoemd. Nederlandse taal- en letterkunde werd echter al vanaf de stichting van de universiteit in 1880 gedoceerd aan alle studenten. Hoe heeft het zover kunnen komen, en hoe moet het verder?
